This Thursday, December 12th The Haddam Historical Society will be hosting a Holiday Open House. There will be crafts, Wassail (more on that in a moment) and the gift shop will be open! It starts a 5pm and ends at 8pm. The Thankful Arnold House is at 14 Hayden Hill Road in Haddam. Phone is 860-345-2400.
Frances Phipps, a long gone Haddam resident would serve Wassail at holiday gatherings. Wassail is a traditional New England rum based beverage. I have been given this recipe to share with you. This would be such a treat to serve on a cold winters night and would surely bring much cheer 😉
: Frances Phipps’ family Wassail
5qts of cider (sweet)
a handful of whole cloves, cardamom seeds (remove shells)
2tbls. ground nutmeg
1qt of dark rum
simmer altogether (do not boil) for at least an hr. Just before serving add 1 bottle of rum to the mix add sugar to taste, and simmer until quite warm. Do Not Boil!
Hope to see you at the Thankful Arnold House!!
